Which Australian Bank is Best for My Needs?

Banks and ATMs are quite accessible in Australia. But there are other things that you have to consider when choosing a bank. Every bank offers different services.

Before you choose a bank to open an account, it is important to understand the type of accounts available in Australia and the things you should consider before opening a bank account in Australia from overseas.

Types of Bank Accounts in Australia

The banking system in Australia uses Electronic Funds Transfer as a Point of Sale (EFTPOS) instead of the normal debit card system. It is very similar to how you pay with your debit card. EFTPOS is a native way of Australia and New Zealand to pay locally for your purchases quite easily.

There are 3 main types of bank accounts available in Australia. It’s quite essential to understand all these accounts to find which ones suit your need to manage your money and use it locally.

Cheque Account: This is a standard type of current account that you need for your daily needs such as payments, deposits, and ATMs. It is generally linked to your debit card or EFTPOS. Whenever you make a purchase, the money is deducted from your account.

Savings account: A saving account is an additional account that is opened along with your cheque account: account (your current account). It is used to put your savings aside and earn some interest on the amount that you hold.

Credit Account: This is the account that is linked to your credit card. However, it would be a bit difficult to get a credit account if you newly move to Australia. To open a credit account in Australia, you might have to wait a few months after you’ve moved to Australia. This would give the banks some time to monitor your transaction and credit score before they can grant you a credit card.

Here are things that you should consider when choosing a bank

  • Account fees: What are the monthly fees and monthly deposit limits
  • Service charges: Fees for using ATMs or international money transfer
  • Ease of opening the account: How easy it is to open a bank account before you arrive in Australia
  • Local branches and ATMs: The bank you selected should be accessible from the location where you would be staying in Australia
  • Online and mobile banking: Is it possible to manage your money online and you can access your account from your phone

ATM Fees in Australia

ATM fees are not so common in Australia. The “big four” Australian banks – ANZ, Westpac, NAB and Commbank removed the ATM fees back in 2017 for their customers. It is the same for the home bank or any of the other 3 three banks.

This means that you won’t have any trouble withdrawing cash from any ATM and don’t need to locate your own bank’s ATM. You can withdraw cash for free almost anywhere in Australia.

However, this is more like a “partnership” between the top 4 banks. But you may be charged by the smaller Australian banks with an average fee of 2 AUD.

That being said, this alliance doesn’t extend to all banks in Australia. Most of the smaller providers will often still charge you an average of $2. That being said, the “big four” banks contribute to the majority of the ATMs in Australia, so you won’t face any difficulty most of the time.
